Delegated authority

Permission within defined boundaries

Permission for a person or system to perform specified actions within stated limits and conditions. It makes clear what can happen without another approval and when the work must return to a person.

An example

An assistant may prepare an internal quote draft using standard pricing, but needs an account owner’s approval before releasing it to the customer. Permission to draft does not include permission to change an approved discount.

What to check

Define scope, thresholds, escalation, revocation and verification. Reasoning capability is separate from execution permission.

In practice

Define permitted actions, records, limits and escalation conditions separately. Review authority when roles or workflows change, and make it possible to stop an action that no longer meets the agreed conditions.
